‘Eucharist’ comes from the Greek word eukaristeo, which means to give thanks. It is used in some Christian traditions to describe the Lord’s Supper, as in all the biblical accounts of Jesus’ last meal with His disciples, He is described as giving thanks for the bread and the wine (Matthew 26:26-27, Mark 14:22-23, Luke 22:17-19 and 1 Corinthians 11:24).
